Caribbean Labour Solidarity fully supports the 90th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Cable Street. We mark this day because on Sunday 4th October 1936, Oswald Mosley’s Blackshirts announced a march through the heart of Whitechapel, targeting London’s East End Jewish communities.

Instead of hiding from the fascist threat, thousands of men and women from diverse backgrounds, stood together against the fascists, declaring “They Shall Not Pass!”, Jewish and Irish communities, alongside trade unionists, local residents and anti fascists from across London and Britain filled the streets, forming a human blockade at ‘Gardiners Corner’ in Aldgate East, and built barricades in Cable Street. That day, they prevented Mosley’s fascists from marching through the East End.
Their actions became a lasting symbol of the power of solidarity and collective action to defeat fascism, racism and antisemitism. Since then Caribbean, African and South Asian communities have felt the ire of such forces that were unleashed against them in the post-war period.
From the Notting Hill attacks of 1958; the Southall Uprisings of ‘79 – following the brutal murder of Gurdip Singh Chaggar in 1976 – the killing of Blair Peach; and the resistance established during the Rock Against Racism period from ‘76 to ‘82, it has been clearly shown that strong resistance to these wicked forces will defeat their intent. CLS calls upon all right-minded persons to join us on the 4th October to demonstrate that racism will be defeated.
2026 – They Shill Not Pass. In 2026, the legacy of the Battle of Cable Street continues to inspire us to stand together against hatred, division and racist scapegoating of migrants, refugees and communities due to their faith, ethnicity or national background. To defend the values of inclusion, equality and democracy, we must honour the heroes of the Battle of Cable Street. We also honour the unity shown in the 1970s, when local communities came together to defeat the fascist National Front as it sought to terrorise Bangladeshis and other Black and Asian communities.
