Resolution at UCU Congress 2023

The following resolution was passed at the University and College Union (UCU) Annual Congress 2023

EQ13 Refugees Welcome, Campaign Against Racism         National executive committee 

Congress reaffirms solidarity with refugees and migrants and commitment to opposing racism.

Congress deplores:

  1. The continuing hostile climate to refugees
  2. The racist immigration and asylum legislation
  3. The ‘Rwanda plan’ to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda
  4. The attacks and protests by Patriotic Alliance and other far right groups on refugee housing.

Congress calls on NEC, members and branches to:

  1. Step up the campaign to overturn racist asylum and immigration legislation
  2. and bring a motion to TUC Congress

WIlliam Gladstone’s maiden speech to Parliament was in defence of Slavery. He believed enslaved workers should undergo some form of “civilisation” process before emancipation and when abolition was finally agreed, he negotiated the equivalent of £14m “compensation” for his father. 124 years after his death his name needs to be removed.

Emergency trade union protest rally to ‘protect the right to strike

6pm, 22 May, Parliament Square, London

The TUC and Unions are organising an emergency protest rally in Parliament Square, Westminster, from 6pm, 22 May. The date of the emergency rally coincides with the vote on the Minimum Services Level bill in the House of Commons.

We want MPs to:

  • First and foremost vote to REJECT the whole bill, and at the very least
  • Vote to UPHOLD the four amendments passed in the House of Lords,
  • And if House of Commons passes the legislation and the bill comes into law, MPs should PLEDGE to repeal it at the earliest opportunity, and
