Caribbean Labour Solidarity supports the strikes and demonstrations in Trinidad and Tobago

The Executive of Caribbean Labour Solidarity (CLS) issued the following statement concerning the unprecedented wave of industrial action sweeping the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago:

Caribbean Labour Solidarity wishes to make clear its support for the workers in Trinidad and Tobago. Workers, both blue and white collar, are in a massive struggle against a state which wishes to return them to a pre-trade union era, when workers had no rights and no trade unions.

CLS will always support those who are struggling against such draconian measures.

We call for the following in Trinidad and Tobago:

Renewal and Reconciliation: The Codrington Reparations Project” was announced in 2023 in partnership with The Codrington Trust (CT) and the United Society Partners in the Gospel (USPG). This aims to take reparative action in response to USPG’s shameful links to slavery on the Codrington Estate, Barbados.

  • Are they doing enough to apologise and make restitution?
  • How have they dealt with the record of enslavers?
  • Is the money they are offering adequate?
  • How does all this fit into the modern campaign for Reparations?

Speaker Sadie DeCoste

Sadie is a climate change researcher and activist with a focus on climate reparations, transformative adaptation, and loss and damage. At Tipping Point, she supports the Climate Reparations Network and the Care & Repair team. She co-founded the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition and has been active in loss and damage movements for several years.

She will be talking about climate reparations specifically, what it means, why it’s important and where the movement is at now.
