Caribbean Labour Solidarity\u00a0<\/b>fully supports\u00a0<\/b>the 90th<\/sup> anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Cable Street. We mark this day because on Sunday 4th October 1936, Oswald Mosley\u2019s Blackshirts\u00a0announced a march through the heart of Whitechapel,\u00a0targeting London’s East End Jewish communities.<\/p>\n

Meet Sunday 4 October at 12.00 outside Tower Hamlets Town Hall, march begins 13.00 (tube: Whitechapel).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Instead of hiding from the fascist threat, thousands of men\u00a0and women from diverse backgrounds, stood together against the fascists,\u00a0declaring \u201cThey Shall Not Pass!<\/i>\u201d,\u00a0Jewish and Irish communities, alongside trade\u00a0unionists, local residents and anti fascists from across London and Britain filled the\u00a0streets, forming a human blockade at ‘Gardiners Corner’ in Aldgate\u00a0East, and built barricades in Cable Street. That day, they prevented Mosley’s\u00a0fascists from marching through the East End.<\/p>\n

Their actions became a lasting symbol of the power of solidarity and collective action to defeat fascism, racism and antisemitism.\u00a0Since then Caribbean, African and South Asian communities have felt the ire of such forces that were unleashed against them in the post-war period.<\/p>\n

From the Notting Hill attacks of 1958; the Southall Uprisings of \u201879 – following the brutal murder of\u00a0Gurdip Singh Chaggar in 1976 – the killing of Blair Peach; and the resistance established during the Rock Against Racism period from \u201876 to \u201882, it has been clearly shown that strong resistance to these wicked forces will defeat their intent. CLS calls upon all right-minded persons to join us on the 4th<\/sup>\u00a0October to demonstrate that racism will be defeated.<\/p>\n

2026 – They Shill Not Pass<\/b>.\u00a0<\/b>In 2026, the legacy of the Battle of Cable Street continues to inspire us to stand\u00a0together against hatred, division and racist scapegoating of migrants, refugees and\u00a0communities due to their faith, ethnicity or national background. To defend the\u00a0values of inclusion, equality and democracy, we must honour the heroes of the\u00a0Battle of Cable Street. We also honour the unity shown in the 1970s, when local\u00a0communities came together to defeat the fascist National Front as it sought to\u00a0terrorise Bangladeshis and other Black and Asian communities.<\/p>\n
