So far, the consequences of Chevron’s operation have had serious impacts on the peoples of the northern Ecuadorian Amazon: cancer, hunger, extermination, and a host of injustices that are widely known in the region. In addition, the architecture of impunity, the complicity of neoliberal states, and the Investor-State Dispute Settlement Mechanism (ISDS) guarantee the continuity of criminal operations of the transnational oil company in other countries in different parts of the world.

We express our solidarity with the affected indigenous nationalities and Ecuadorian peasant organisations and movements; the rights of the people and their human rights take precedence over any trade agreement or the accumulation interests of transnational corporations and their model of dispossession. In one voice with UDAPT we demand the approval of the ambitious and effective international legally binding instrument on transnational corporations on human rights (Binding Treaty) in the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council. The Binding Treaty in the version worked on with the participation of the affected people and the organisations and movements articulated in the Global Campaign to Reclaim Peoples’ Sovereignty, Dismantle Corporate Power and End Impunity, is an instrument that will open the way to access to justice, full reparation and guarantees of non-repetition.

We urge the Ecuadorian government to respect the Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador, to respect the legal instruments of Human Rights, and therefore to respect the sentence that favours the Amazonian inhabitants. For us, it is unacceptable that an arbitration award based on investment protection instruments should be given supremacy, and that a judgment based on human rights instruments should be disregarded. The conspiratorial position of the Ecuadorian state is also unacceptable.

Our will and our actions are with the peoples of the Ecuadorian Amazon and their sovereignty, we will work at their side until impunity is ended.

We are still fighting!

Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC)
August 25, 2024
@atalc
